Overview

Psoriasis is a skin disorder. As per the report of WHO (2016), about 125 million global population and 3 crore Indians are affected by either kind of psoriasis. Living with psoriasis is a three way burden: Mental, Social and Economic which negatively affect general well being.

Symptoms

Psoriasis can present with a variety of symptoms, which may vary in severity depending on the individual and the type of psoriasis. Common symptoms include:

  • Itching: Persistent or intense itching in affected areas.

  • Burning: A burning sensation on or around the plaques.

  • Bleeding: Cracks in the skin caused by dryness or scratching can lead to bleeding.

  • Inflammation & Reddening: Affected areas are often red, swollen, and inflamed.

  • Scales & Silvery Patches: Thick layers of dead skin cells that appear as silvery, flaky patches.

  • Thickened Skin: The rapid buildup of cells leads to visibly thickened and hardened skin.

  • New Skin Development: The body produces new skin cells at an accelerated rate, causing overlapping layers.

  • Flare-ups: Symptoms may worsen due to triggers like seasonal changes (cold, dry weather), exposure to certain chemicals, stress, or insect bites.

  • Dandruff, Hair Fall, and Scalp Scales: Psoriasis on the scalp can cause flaky dandruff-like scales, itching, and hair loss.

  • Nail Deformity & Discoloration: Nails may develop pits, ridges, become discolored, thicken, or even separate from the nail bed (onycholysis).

  • Psoriasis of Flexural Regions: Smooth, red patches in skin folds, such as under the breasts, around the groin, or near the genitals.

Treatment at present

Existing treatments are topical, injections and Biologicals which give temporary relief from the symptoms. Treatments available are used to manage the symptoms and must be used for a lifetime. The current anti-psoriasis products are made from steroids, synthetic chemicals, coal tar along with selective herbal ingredients. These medicinal ingredients are already known for some or more side effects.
